Charleston’s Newest Hot Spot – Basic Kitchen

We hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday – we sure did! Ashley went home with her husband to North Carolina, while I stayed behind since most of my family is already here. Last weekend, my family and I were feeling in need of some healthy food before stuffing our faces with chocolate and cookies over Christmas. I had heard so many good things about the brand new restaurant, Basic Kitchen so I immediately suggested that we go there. I had heard that the food they served there was all locally sourced, very fresh, some of it was vegan, and very healthy. Knowing this made our decision quite easy!

When we walked into the restaurant we were in awe of how beautiful the decor in the restaurant was and how it was laid out. There was a bar you could sit at that almost reminded me of something you would see in an old movie. At the bar they were serving up cocktails, mocktails, and coffee drinks! It was a beautiful day outside so we decided to sit out on the back patio and enjoy our meal.

Our waiter told us that the restaurant’s signature dishes were the Basic Bowl and the Rainbow Bowl. I had heard a lot of great things about the Basic Bowl, so I opted for that. The Basic Bowl consists of a bowl of rice(the kind of rice differs day-to-day) topped with a grilled sweet potato, grilled brussels sprouts smothered in horseradish and honey, sesame kale, and braised beans with tomato and garlic. It is served with two different kinds of sauces. I’m not entirely sure what they were, but I could’ve eaten a whole bowl of each of them! You have the option of adding a protein to the bowl and your options are miso glazed salmon or grilled chicken with chimichurri. The basic bowl costs $14 and if you add protein, its $8 more. In the mindset of saving money, I opted for no protein. I thought the Basic Bowl was quite delicious. My favorite part of it was the brussels sprouts. The horseradish and honey mixed in with them gave the dish a very unique flavor that I really enjoyed. It all tasted very fresh and was the perfect healthy meal I had been craving.

My brother ordered the same thing as me, except added salmon to his bowl. He also thought it was quite delicious and thought the salmon was very flavorful and seasoned quite well. My dad ordered their avocado toast ($8) and added a sunny side up duck egg to it ($2). He really enjoyed it, though he felt that it was not a very filling portion of food. Keep in mind however that it takes quite a bit of food to make him full! My mom ordered the Cauliflower “Wings” ($8), which consisted of tempura fried cauliflower, buffalo sauce, pickled celery, and cashew ranch. She thought they were delicious and really liked the tangy flavor of the buffalo sauce paired with the crunchy texture of the fried cauliflower and the delicious cashew ranch sauce.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Basic Kitchen, though we were in agreement that the prices at this restaurant were a bit steep, considering that we knew we could make a lot of these dishes at home for a much cheaper price! Since this seems to be the new hot spot in Charleston, I would definitely suggest checking it out if you’re not in the mood to cook. As for affordability, I would not say this is the most ideal place to go for a meal out. It will be much better on your wallet making one of these dishes in the comfort of your own home!
