Little Jack’s Tavern “Best Burger in the Nation”

Last weekend, some friends and I decided to finally see what all the hype was about the infamous burger at Little Jack’s Tavern. It was recently deemed the title of the “Best Burger in the Nation” by Bon Appetit, so we had to find out if this burger truly lived up to that name.

Before ordering our burgers, we started with a few appetizers. We went for the garlic knots ($6), a side order of french fried potatoes ($5), and a side order of the grilled asparagus ($6…you know, got to stick to those New Years resolutions somehow…). The garlic knots were warm soft pretzels, fresh out of the oven and were served with a velvety cheese sauce that was of the perfect creamy consistency. The cheese sauce was good, but also didn’t taste too different from your average cheese sauce, though it paired well with the pretzels. The pretzel knots were so warm and soft, that they literally melted in my mouth. It’s safe to say that I could’ve eaten at least five more.

The french fried potatoes were probably up there with some of the best fries I’ve had in a long time. They were soft and crispy, all at the same time and it was hard to stop eating them once I started. They have garlic and herb fries on their menu for $2 more, but since we already had ordered the garlic knots, we opted for the non-flavored, (and cheaper) fries. We honestly didn’t think these fries needed any more flavor than they already had. I definitely plan on coming back for another plate!

The asparagus was beautifully cooked as well. I think it was doused in a bit too much olive oil, but the spices and garlic on top helped make up for it. It was perfectly grilled, giving it a good amount of crunch, and the spices and garlic on top gave it a very delectable flavor.

After finishing our appetizers, we were ready for our main course – The Tavern Burger. I can safely say that this burger does in fact live up to the hype. I don’t think I can recall the last burger I had that tasted better than this one. The Tavern Burger ($8) is a very simple burger consisting of a 50/50 mixture of ground chuck and brisket and is cooked medium rare. A large slice of melted American cheese is draped over top of the patty, and on top of the cheese is a slather of Little Jack’s special Tavern Sauce. This delicious burger is placed between two buns baked fresh by Pane Di Vita, located in West Ashley. Despite the simplicity of the burger, there was definitely an explosion of flavor in my mouth. I did a little investigating to figure out what about this simple burger was so good, and I came to the realization that a big part of it was the sauce. The sauce is made from a mixture of pickled sunchokes, ketchup, mayo, garlic, and some very special hot sauce. The burger itself was super moist and tender and full of a tangy flavor and the cheese melted on top just took the cake. I will definitely be coming back for another! I was told that people sometimes get this burger as an appetizer and split it, but there will definitely be no splitting for me!

Cost-wise, this restaurant is definitely not the most affordable place for a meal out. However, if you do what we did and order some sides as your appetizers, it definitely won’t put a dent in your wallet. The sides are all $7 or less. The Tavern Burger isn’t badly priced either, especially for being named the best burger in the nation (and living up to it). I would definitely suggest heading over to Little Jack’s if you’re feeling in need of a really good burger that won’t break the bank. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed!
