Warming Up at Goulette

It’s safe to say that the whole month of January left our teeth chattering and our cravings for hot soup strong. Fortunately for those who aren’t into cooking, that’s where Goulette comes in handy. Goulette is a restaurant that is new to Charleston’s ever-growing restaurant scene, its predecessor being Lana (Ashley and I were both sad to see it go-we LOVED their Gnocchi!). Lana was definitely more on the pricey side though, so I was hoping that Goulette would be more affordable and a bit more casual.

Things turned out to work in my favor, because when I walked into this restaurant with my parents last week in our post-workout clothes, we were immediately given a table to sit at (no reservations needed!) by the window and felt perfectly at home by the very cozy decor of the restaurant. When I looked at the food menu, I was excited that the first thing I saw were soups that cost only $6.50! It was a cold night and soup was exactly what my parents and I were craving. Since both the soups and salads were marked at the most affordable prices on the menu, I decided to order the Vegetable Soup and their Tomato Mozzarella Salad.

The Vegetable Soup consisted of a puree of leeks, potatoes, and carrots. I thought it was very flavorful and I scarfed it down pretty quickly. It had a good smooth and creamy texture and a slight tangy flavor, but probably could’ve gone with a little less salt.


The Tomato Mozzarella Salad ($11.50) was a salad complete with fresh, sliced tomatoes, a huge ball of Burrata cheese, and was topped with olive oil, basil and a balsamic drizzle.


I think my favorite of the two was the salad. I am a huge fan of cheese and this cheese literally melted in my mouth. It was perfectly creamy and soft, with a hint of tartness. It paired quite well with the freshly sliced tomatoes, drizzled with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze.

I think what would make the pricing of their soups and salads even more affordable would be if they offered a soup and salad combo price, but even being separately priced, you’re not going to break the bank.  Not to mention, you’re getting some quite delicious food in a very warm and casual setting. Perfect for these unusually cold Charleston winter days!

Goulette is known for their Rotisserie Chicken and other freshly grilled meats (steak, fish, pulled pork, and duck), which are more on the pricey side, ranging from $16-$20. At lunch however, the Rotisserie Chicken is priced at $13 instead of the $20 dinner price and the Grilled Hanger Steak is priced at $15 instead of the $25 dinner price. Therefore, if you’re dying to try some of their meats, I would definitely suggest going to Goulette for lunch.

This restaurant is the perfect spot for a low key, casual and affordable dinner or lunch, especially on a cold day. I loved that we were seated at a table immediately upon walking into the restaurant on a Friday night. Order a soup or a salad if you’re looking for the most affordable option, but if you’re feeling adventurous or like splurging, go for the meat.
